Chicken Photoshoot

Welcome to the hens' pasture! One day Jessie and I took a few minutes to capture the chickens expressing their chicken-ness and thought we'd share them with you. By the way, Jessie has been volunteering on the farm a couple days a week since this spring, and she has been quite the trooper...from dodging cow poo in the milking parlor when she'd never even milked a cow before to working in the sweltering heat to getting a lesson in tractor driving (pictured below) and much more. We are thankful for her tenacity and helping hands! :)

If this picture were a song, don't you think "slide to the left!" would be one of the lines??

So curious. I set the egg crate up high for a couple minutes while I was tending to something else. Literally had a chicken inside the crate when I came back for it.

This girl balanced on one leg and gave me the eye from different angles the whole time I was clicking away.

The roll-out nest boxes and the feeders are in one shelter and another shelter is where they roost and sleep. The roost houses have a small door with a timer so it will open (and close) automatically according to the timer. On the mornings we move them, we adjust the open time so (most of) the hens are still inside and it's easier to pull everything forward with the tractor. When we finally open the door, LOOK OUT! because they are in a HURRY to get out of there! There's usually a mad dash for the nests, but also the feeders and of course the most enterprising hens start exploring the new section of pasture for greens, bugs, worms, seeds, and whatever other treasures they find.

Chicken moving mornings (twice a week until we move them in to a stationary spot for the winter) start even earlier than usual mornings. Getting up earlier isn't too fun usually, yet I have to say that there is a whole lot of beauty to be seen at dawn. I just have to stop long enough to notice and then drink it in.
This business is a lot of work and not for the faint of heart. But the eggs these chickens lay are so full of flavor, the yolks so golden, the hens so happy, that we want to keep eating eggs like this ourselves and provide a delicious and nutritious product for you and your family as well.
